Gold Sovereign | The Royal Mint

Sovereign Gold Bullion

Since The Royal Mint struck the first Sovereign in 1489, the gold coin has survived retirement, rebirth and reform to become a modern classic with a unique legacy. In 1819, the Ricardo Ingot Plan almost saw gold coins replaced by banknotes. A century later the First World War saw the use of gold coins as circulating currency reduce to such a degree that Sovereign coin production stopped in 1917. But the gold coin endured, now highly prized by collectors and eagerly awaited each year. Its story of survival and excellence now continues with The Sovereign 2019 Collection.
