Frequently Asked Questions

Each year, The Royal Mint celebrates British milestones, anniversaries, and individuals on official UK coins. As the nation comes together to celebrate His Majesty King Charles III's coronation, The Royal Mint has produced a special collection of coins, including a 50p, to mark the occasion.

With a long history of striking coins for every British Monarch, it is fitting for The Royal Mint to celebrate His Majesty's coronation

We are delighted to confirm that 5 million of the coronation 50p coins will enter into circulation later this year. The 50p coins entering circulation will not feature King Charles III's crowned coin portrait. The obverse (heads side) will feature the coin portrait designed by Martin Jennings, revealed in late 2022. The crowned coin portrait will appear on the commemorative coronation coins only.

The Royal Mint has a long history of producing coronation medals to celebrate and mark when a new monarch is crowned as King or Queen. These portraits often depict the monarch wearing a crown to symbolize the moment that a King or Queen is crowned. For His Majesty King Charles III’s coronation, The Royal Mint has adapted this age-old tradition by introducing the first official crowned coinage portrait of His Majesty produced by Martin Jennings, to appear on a range of commemorative coins marking King Charles III’s coronation.

For those wanting to mark these historic moments of national celebration with a lasting reminder, an official UK coin struck by The Royal Mint is the perfect opportunity.

The crown that features on His Majesty King Charles III’s crowned coin portrait, can be identified as the Tudor Crown. This was personally selected by His Majesty and is the same crown that can be seen as part of The King’s Royal Cypher.

Historically a Monarch's Crown has varied considerably in physical form and in its renderings in art. This can be traced back to the start of Edward VII's reign, with a standard form of a Crown being depicted on coins as part of his portrait.
