Ready to design your own 50p? It’s easier than you think!
All you need is a pencil, paper, a protractor, a compass and a ruler from your maths set, along with a steady hand.
First, draw a line between X and Y as shown in the diagram. Then mark a point about halfway along as your centre.
Next we’re going to draw the radial lines from the centre. To do this accurately, you’ll need your protractor. Each line needs to be 51 3/7 degrees away from the other.
Looking good. Your 50p is starting to take shape.
Now you need to decide how wide your coin is going to be. Draw a straight line parallel to the first one – it’s marked P and Q on the example. Note how it intersects on the middle of the three radial lines at point A.
Time to grab your compass. Set it to the width you want for your coin and with centre A, draw an arc between E and D.
From E and D respectively, draw arcs AB and GA, and so on, until the heptagon is complete. And there you have it, your very own 50p coin.
