This Anglo-Saxon Silver Sceat is in good Very Fine condition. It is struck using the hammered coin method and is made using fine silver. This coin is a series C sceat produced at the mint in Kent.
Hammered coinage was produced by hand and required two die tools, each engraved with the obverse and reverse. The obverse bore the portrait of the monarch and would have a spike at the base to hold it in a piece of wood. A fresh blank was placed on the die face and a secondary tool bearing the reverse design would be hammered on top of this to transfer both images to the coin.
