This George III 1786 Maundy Set features four silver coins that would have been gifted by the monarch to the elderly during a special Maundy Thursday. This set includes silver fourpenny, threepenny, twopenny and one penny pieces. The tradition of Maundy money dates to the reign of Charles II, with coins being gifted to the same number of recipients as the monarch’s age. Each coin features a coinage portrait of George III on the obverse, whilst each reverse features a crowned design above a number denoting that coin’s value.
