Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is the world’s oldest and largest inhabited castle. It was established by William the Conqueror in the 1070s, and has been a home and retreat for the Royal Family for centuries. The castle has been extended, refurbished and enhanced by the 39 monarchs that have lived there.

More than a million people visit each year, many to view its architectural and artistic treasures, and some to catch a glimpse of the Royal Family, as Windsor is one of the most renowned official residences of Her Majesty The Queen.

The Royal Mint and Royal Mail have come together to create a limited edition medal and stamp set to celebrate this royal residence. Six stamps are included, featuring photographs of the impressive exterior and interior of the castle, including the instantly recognisable Round Tower and Roman Gate, and St George’s Hall. The cover is richly detailed with the history of the castle and the highlights that can be found behind its walls.

Each set contains a medal featuring an illustration of Windsor Castle by Royal Mint coin designer Emma Noble, who has captured an imposing vision of the castle. The reverse has a quote from Samuel Pepys, who described the castle as “the most romantique castle that is in the world.”
