The White Lion of Mortimer is the seventh design in The Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts Collection, and is a fascinating heraldic creature that comes to Her Majesty The Queen through her ancestor Edward IV. Edward IV, the first of the Yorkist kings, represents a tumultuous time in England’s history. After deposing Henry VI to gain the throne he then lost it to that same man nine years later. He won it back again soon thereafter.

Notably different than the Lion of England in the absence of a crown, the White Lion of Mortimer stands behind a shield bearing a combination of two heraldic badges that were often used by Edward IV and his supporters. The ten-ounce coin, struck in 999 fine silver and finished to Proof standard, has been one of the most popular in The Queen's Beasts Collection. In fact, some editions of other designs have sold out. With just 240 of these White Lion of Mortimer ten-ounce silver Proof coins available, it is likely that history will repeat itself.
