Use of the rose in royal badging traces back to at least the reign of Edward I (1239–1307), but the strength of the symbol arguably reached its peak in the Wars of the Roses – a violent power struggle the waged on and off for more than 30 years. The white rose, of course, comes from the House of York, the branch to which was Edward IV allied when he first took to the throne in 1461. It is a symbol that features prominently on a shield held by the White Lion of Mortimer, as seen in this modern interpretation of the ancestral beast.

With its 100-millimetre diameter, this kilo coin offers the best view of Jody Clark's design, allowing the viewer to spot even the tiniest feature, such as the texture of the lion's mane. The precision and skill for which The Royal Mint is praised around the world ensures that each detail is clear and the coin is finished to Proof standard.
