The proud and powerful Unicorn of Scotland

When James VI of Scotland succeeded Elizabeth I of England, becoming James I of England, the union of the two countries required a new coat of arms. The new king chose the Scottish Unicorn to join the Lion of England in supporting the Royal Arms. Today the Unicorn is still a popular symbol of Scottish heritage, appearing at the top of ‘mercat’ or market crosses that can be found in many Scottish towns.

Jody Clark has captured the fantastical creature in his contemporary interpretation of this mythical member of The Queen’s Beasts. His design has been perfected by The Royal Mint’s Proof finish, with every detail captured on this edition, which has been struck in a quarter-ounce of 999.9 fine gold. The coin is presented in a Royal Mint case and comes with a booklet produced in association with Clive Cheesman, Richmond Herald at the College of Arms.
