More than 2,200 years old, this silver Drachm offers a direct connection to the world shaped by Alexander III of Macedon, known to history as Alexander the Great. Struck around 295–275 BC, after Alexander’s death, it carries the enduring designs issued in his name across the Hellenistic world and remains one of the most recognisable types in ancient Greek coinage.

The obverse portrays the youthful Herakles facing right, wearing the skin of the Nemean lion. Herakles was one of the great heroes of Greek mythology, admired for his strength and courage. Alexander’s Macedonian royal family claimed descent from Herakles, so the image also expressed the dynasty’s legendary heritage. The powerful portrait is often understood to carry features associated with Alexander himself, adding another layer of interest to the design.

On the reverse, Zeus, king of the Greek gods, sits on his throne holding an eagle in his outstretched hand and a sceptre in the other. The Greek legend identifies Alexander, while the eagle and sceptre communicate divine authority and royal power. Together, the two sides form a carefully balanced statement of heroic ancestry and kingly rule.
