Mary Shelley's Frankenstein at 200

Frankenstein is one of the most enduring and popular novels of all time. For 200 years, the story has instigated conversation, provoked intellectual and radical thinking, prompted debates on scientific advancements and has been at the centre of public perception.

The legacy of Mary Shelley’s creation is profound and undeniable. Continuing to inspire generations of people who encounter the novel, from writers to artists to film-makers, Frankenstein is discussed as passionately today as it was when it was first published in 1818.

To mark the 200th anniversary since Frankenstein was first published, we are proud to release a coin designed by Royal Mint coin designer Thomas T. Docherty. Inspired by the spark of inspiration which is evident upon encountering Frankenstein, Thomas’ design portrays ECG monitor style wording of ‘Frankenstein’, depicting the jagged pulse of a heartbeat.
