New Military Coins from The Royal Mint
ENGRAVED IN HISTORY

26 Jun 2017

The Royal Mint is to continue marking one of the world’s most important minting anniversaries by announcing two additional limited edition anniversary Sovereigns along with the launch of a special edition Five-Sovereign Piece. As for the special Sovereign 2017 coins released in October, each is to feature Pistrucci’s original 1817 masterpiece with the full garter border and inscription, which in 2017 has been struck for the first time since 1820. The design has been carefully remastered from the master engraver’s tools.

Now, in recognition of the 200th anniversary of the world famous coin, the following coins are to be launched:

The 200th Anniversary of The Sovereign Brilliant Uncirculated Coin – struck on 1 July 2017

The Sovereign is sometimes struck on the day of historic occasions, normally to mark significant royal events. To mark the exact date of this historic occasion, a Strike on the Day Sovereign will be minted on 1 July 2017, the 200th anniversary of the proclamation that revived The Sovereign in 1817.

This edition, finished to Brilliant Uncirculated standard, is the only coin in the range featuring the garter reverse with a plain, not milled, edge. These coins will have a maximum coin mintage of 1,817, representing the date of the proclamation.

The Five-Sovereign Piece 2017 Brilliant Uncirculated Coin

The release of The Five-Sovereign Piece has become an annual tradition that collectors look forward to, and in 2017 this celebratory issue of the coin is particularly special. This is the first time that The Royal Mint has used Pistrucci’s original masterpiece with the full inscription and garter design on The Five-Sovereign Piece.

The Five-Sovereign Piece is the largest coin in The Sovereign family, containing five times the gold of a single Sovereign and finished to Brilliant Uncirculated standard. It is only issued as an individual coin – it is not included in any set.

The first ever Piedfort Sovereign Gold Proof Coin

Piedfort coins originate from France and were first seen in the twelfth century, and translated to English the word means ‘heavy measure’. For this special occasion we are issuing a minting first – a Piedfort edition of The Sovereign. Just 3,500 will be released, struck in twice the thickness of 22 carat gold as The Sovereign and finished to Proof standard.
