We explore some of the highlights of our auction in more detail below.

What is a Trial Piece?
Trial pieces are created during the coin-production process to test the viability of a product or production method. Typically, around 30 trial pieces are produced throughout this process, depending on the complexity of a product, with most of them destroyed afterwards.
The approved trial piece is the last piece struck before mass production and becomes the standard against which all future coins produced are measured. These trial pieces are unique and the only one of their kind in the world.
Die trial pieces are extremely rare, with only a small amount usually kept for reference purposes. This trial pieces auction gives collectors the chance to add one of these rare, one-of-a-kind pieces to their collections.

George Orwell Gold £2 Proof
The highlight of the gold trial pieces available at our upcoming auction is the George Orwell Gold £2 Proof. Celebrating one of Britain’s most influential writers, this striking design pays tribute to Orwell’s enduring literary legacy and his profound impact on political thought and modern culture.
Struck to Proof standard, the coin showcases exceptional detail and craftsmanship, elevating the powerful symbolism associated with Orwell’s works. This rare gold proof trial piece represents a compelling fusion of literature, history and numismatic excellence.

Two Georges Silver £2 Proof
A highlight of the silver trial pieces available includes the Two Georges Silver £2 Proof. This design brings together two pivotal figures from British history, united on a single coin to mark their shared influence on the nation’s heritage.
Struck in silver to Proof standard, the coin benefits from multiple strikes to achieve a refined finish and sharp detailing. The Two Georges design offers collectors a sophisticated and historically resonant addition to their collections.

Monopoly 50p Brilliant Uncirculated
The highlight of the base metal trial pieces available at our latest auction is the Monopoly 50p Brilliant Uncirculated coin. Inspired by the world-famous board game, this design brings a sense of fun and nostalgia to one of the UK’s most popular circulating denominations.
Struck to Brilliant Uncirculated standard, the coin captures crisp detail while celebrating a cultural icon that has entertained generations. This trial piece offers a unique opportunity for collectors to acquire a modern, playful design with broad appeal.
