The 75th Birthday of His Majesty King Charles III

CollectAnnual Sets

Whilst 2022 was undoubtedly a notable year for the Royal Family, from Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in February to her passing in September, 2023 also looks to be a year filled with historic milestones for His Majesty The King.

Just six months after his coronation, His Majesty The King will celebrate his 75th birthday on 14 November 2023. In honour of this landmark anniversary, The Royal Mint has produced a beautifully designed coin that pays tribute to His Majesty’s dearest passions and interests.

Prior to his accession to the throne, King Charles III was the United Kingdom’s longest-serving heir apparent in history. During that time, His Majesty campaigned tirelessly for many years to raise awareness of environmental issues, whilst the charity he founded in 1976, The Prince’s Trust, strives to create better opportunities for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. As an ardent advocate for sustainability and creating a better world for future generations, these matters are undoubtedly close to The King’s heart and fittingly serve as the basis of the 75th birthday £5 design.

God Save The King

Created by Dan Thorne, a product designer at The Royal Mint, the King Charles III 75th birthday coin was personally approved by The King. A numismatic tribute to His Majesty, the artwork for this £5 coin combines traditional heraldic imagery with subtle references to his aforementioned passions. The design features The King’s heraldic badge accompanied by the number 75 to mark his milestone birthday, all framed within oak leaves and delphiniums. The oak leaves represent strength, morale, resistance and knowledge, whilst his favourite garden flowers – delphiniums – reflect his love of nature. The precious-metals editions also include a fitting edge inscription – ‘RESTORING HARMONY WITH NATURE’ – that complements the design.

“From concept through to the final model, I thoroughly enjoyed creating this piece of UK coinage history. As a 75th birthday commemoration, this coin design is a numismatic tribute to His Majesty The King on what is a notable personal milestone for The King. In honour of His Majesty, the design is based upon his love of nature and craft, whilst also referencing his various contributions towards the promotion of sustainability.

“The new heraldic cypher is framed with oak leaves and delphiniums – both of which are of symbolic importance. Delphiniums are The King’s favourite flower and convey his connection with natural sustainability, whilst the oak leaves represent strength, morale, and knowledge. The ‘75’ was hand-drawn and modelled to simulate a stone-cut effect, in reference to The King’s ongoing support of the world of craft.”
