The Great British Treasure Hunt: The Penny Drops

Commemorative • The Great British Treasure Hunt

The Great British Treasure Hunt is a groundbreaking experience built around a coin unlike any other. Inspired by Sir Isaac Newton, Master of the Mint and one of the greatest minds of all time, this coin holds more than meets the eye. Hidden within its design and packaging are layers of secrets, riddles and puzzles waiting to be uncovered.

A World First

For the first time ever, an official UK coin becomes the gateway to an epic nationwide quest. The coin is both a keepsake and a key, a spark to curiosity, imagination and the thrill of the chase.

Inspired by Sir Isaac Newton

Inspired by Sir Isaac Newton

Before he became well-known for his theories of gravity and light, Sir Isaac Newton was appointed Warden of The Royal Mint in 1696 and later Master of the Mint in 1699. What began as a civil service appointment soon became a mission. With his trademark precision, intellect and unrelenting tenacity, Newton took on the national crisis of widespread counterfeiting.

He played a significant role during the Great Recoinage of 1696 – 1698: a vast operation to replace millions of Britain’s worn and forged coins with newly struck, high-quality currency which made coins harder to replicate for counterfeiters. The superior quality of coinage introduced under his stewardship is a legacy that lives on today.

Newton was not just a scientist or philosopher, he was also ‘the guardian of currency’, the man who literally protected the value of coinage – and in doing so, helped restore trust in money itself, securing the stable foundation on which the nation’s economy could thrive.

The Coin is the Key

The Coin is the Key

At the heart of the treasure hunt lies an intricately designed £5 coin inspired by Newton’s remarkable discoveries. Each detail has a purpose – from the orbital paths of planets around a radiant sun at its centre, to the cryptic symbols and encoded references woven into the artwork. This is a coin you do not simply collect, it is an object that puzzlers will need to examine and interact with to complete the puzzles themselves.

Meet the Designers

Meet the Designers

Christian Davies and Matt Dent are no strangers to coins that reward curiosity and careful observation (see the 2008 Queen Elizabeth II definitive reverses and the 2022 Alan Turing 50p). But this project has taken that philosophy further than ever before:
