The Victorian era experienced a period of great change for the country that would impact the modern Britain we know today. This was a time that saw the expansion of the British Empire and advancements in science as well as social reform. Queen Victoria acceded to the throne at the age of 18 and reigned for 63 years, becoming the longest-reigning British monarch at the time of her death.

The popularity of the threepence fluctuated throughout its time in circulation. First introduced during the reign of Edward VI, this coin remained in circulation until decimalisation in 1971. During the reign of George VI, its shape was changed to that of a 12-sided coin. However, this unique shape made it easier to identify in blackouts, which made it a popular denomination during the Second World War.

This coin is also available as part of The Making of Modern Britain Queen Victoria Bundle, which offers collectors the opportunity to own an example of each of the circulating coins of Queen Victoria’s reign.
