Queen Victoria was the only living heir and niece of William IV and upon his death, she acceded to throne to became queen at the age of 18. The Victorian era witnessed advancements in science as well as social reforms and the expansion of the British Empire.

The shilling was a popular denomination when it was in circulation and had a value of 12 pence, with 20 shillings in a pound. Following decimalisation in 1971, the coin was redenominated as a 5p coin. Old shillings continued to circulate alongside the new 5p coins, although these were rarely used much after 1971. The shilling was eventually demonetised in 1990.

This coin is also available as part of The Making of Modern Britain Queen Victoria Bundle, which offers collectors the opportunity to own an example of each of the circulating coins of Queen Victoria’s reign.
