Queen Victoria was one of the longest-reigning monarchs in British history. Acceding to the throne at the age of 18, she went on to reign for an impressive 63 years and had three official coinage portraits throughout her time as monarch. The Victorian era had a lasting impact on the United Kingdom that included the expansion of the British Empire as well as social reforms.
In the form of an individual coin, the halfpenny can be traced back to the thirteenth century. Before this time, pennies would be cut into half or quarters to give customers change. Originally produced as a silver coin, the halfpenny was struck in base metals from the seventeenth century onwards.
This coin is also available as part of The Making of Modern Britain Queen Victoria Bundle, which offers collectors the opportunity to own an example of each of the circulating coins of Queen Victoria’s reign.
