When sculptor Philip Nathan created his interpretation of Britannia for a new bullion coin in 1987, he chose elements such as the trident and olive branch to symbolise her maritime connections and peaceful spirit.

Philip Nathan’s design has become a modern classic, winning awards and redefining security in the bullion market with its pairing with four groundbreaking features. Reflecting the flow of waves as the coin is moved, surface animation provides a background for Britannia, whilst micro-text displaying the words ‘DECUS ET TUTAMEN’, which translate to ‘An ornament and a safeguard’ and describes the features that both decorate and protect the coin. A latent feature in the lower-hand segment of the coin switches between a trident and a padlock based on the viewer’s perspective, emphasising her naval strength and the coin’s secure nature. Tincture lines also carefully highlight details such as the Union flag on Britannia’s shield. Together, these advanced features with this stunning Britannia design make one of the most visually secure coins in the world.
