1958 was a memorable and eventful year in British and World history.

Elvis Presley was drafted into the U.S Army.

NASA was created when President Dwight D Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act.

Tragedy struck the football world when the plane carrying Manchester United Football Club crashed on take-off from Munich Airport, with 23 of the 44 people on board dying from their injuries, including the legendary Duncan Edwards

The standout event of the year for Royal enthusiasts was the announcement that Her Majesty’s eldest son Charles, was to be made Prince of Wales. Charles was just 9 years old and attending Cheam preparatory school in Berkshire when he heard the news from the television and it came as a great shock to him.

The announcement was made by Her Majesty during the closing ceremony of the Empire games in Cardiff Arms Park to the roaring approval of the crowd in attendance and to the millions watching at home, including the young Charles himself who had no pre-warning of the announcement.
