In 1930 The Sovereign was only struck at three Mints - Perth, South Africa and this Melbourne issue. Of the three, this Melbourne issue is by far the rarest with just 77,547 struck, in comparison to 1,915,352 struck in Perth and 9,855,506 in South Africa. It is in fact the second lowest mintage of all Royal Mint Melbourne, non-proof Sovereigns, only beaten by the final issue the following year.
The coin features Bertram Mackennal's portrait of George V on the obverse and Benedetto Pistrucci's depiction of St George and the dragon on the reverse.
