Struck to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Queen Victoria’s accession, the 1887 Victoria Proof Sovereign Golden Jubilee issue holds a special place in the history of Britain’s flagship gold coin. Graded PF62 Cameo, this example captures the distinctive appearance of Victorian proof coinage, with frosted devices standing proudly against deeply mirrored fields, and offers a tangible connection to the celebrations that took place across the Empire in the summer of 1887.

The obverse bears Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm’s Jubilee Head portrait of Queen Victoria facing left, the mature monarch wearing a small crown, veil and ornate jewels, with the legend VICTORIA DEI GRATIA running around. Introduced specifically for the Golden Jubilee, Boehm’s effigy replaced the long‑lived Young Head and immediately signalled a new phase in the Queen’s reign. In proof, the PF62 Cameo designation highlights the contrast between the softly frosted portrait and the reflective field, drawing out the fine detail of the crown, veil and bodice that can be lost on circulated currency strikes.

On the reverse, Benedetto Pistrucci’s timeless St George and the dragon returns in its full Victorian splendour, the mounted saint, rearing horse and coiled dragon rendered in crisp high relief. The year date 1887 appears in the exergue beneath the scene, anchoring the coin firmly to the Jubilee year, while the milled edge and sharply defined denticles emphasise the care taken in producing these special‑occasion pieces. The cameo effect on the reverse further enhances the design, with the frosted figures standing out dramatically against the brilliant gold field.

For the numismatist, the 1887 Proof Sovereign is rich in points of interest: it is the first proof sovereign to feature the Jubilee Head, a key type in any Victoria portrait set; it belongs to a celebrated proof issue that also encompassed the new Jubilee silver and gold denominations; and in PF62 Cameo it retains strong eye appeal while clearly exhibiting the diagnostic features of an original proof striking. As a Golden Jubilee issue that unites Boehm’s landmark portrait with Pistrucci’s classic reverse, an 1887 Victoria Proof Sovereign graded PF62 Cameo forms a distinguished and historically resonant centrepiece in any collection devoted to nineteenth‑century sovereigns, portrait types of Victoria or the great ceremonial milestones of the British monarchy.
