The 1823 George IV Gold Two Pounds, often referred to as the Double Sovereign, is a coin of exceptional historic importance within the great tradition of British gold coinage. Struck in the early years of George IV’s reign, it was the very first year a £2 piece was struck for circulation and remains one of the most celebrated large gold coins of the early nineteenth century.

The obverse bears the head of George IV facing left, designed by Jean Baptiste Merlen. It reflects the king’s desire to be immortalised as youthful, handsome, and classically proportioned, standing in contrast to the unflattering caricatures of his time. The portrait is surrounded by the Latin legend “GEORGIUS IIII D G BRITANNIAR REX F D,” affirming the monarch’s royal titles.

The reverse displays one of the most famous images in British coinage, Pistrucci’s neoclassical masterpiece of Saint George on horseback triumphing over the dragon. This iconic motif, first used on the sovereigns of George III, appears here in bold definition across the larger flan of the £2 piece, allowing the design’s full design to be appreciated. Below the exergue line, the initials of William Wellesley Pole, then Master of the Mint, lend an additional point of historical interest.

The 1823 issue was struck at The Royal Mint in London in 22 carat gold, with each coin weighing 15.97 grams and measuring 28 millimetres in diameter. It was produced in very limited numbers compared with the sovereign, making it a rare prize among collectors of early nineteenth-century coinage. Surviving examples are relatively few, and coins reaching certified higher grades are much admired for the sharpness of their detail and the quality of their preservation.

Certified AU58, this example shows only the lightest evidence of handling, placing it just below full Mint State. Attractive detail remains across both obverse and reverse, with strong definition to the king’s portrait and Pistrucci’s vigorous reverse design.
