Struck in 1817, this historic gold Sovereign marks the rebirth of Britain’s most famous coin following the great recoinage of the early nineteenth century. Issued during the later years of the reign of George III, it represents the first Sovereign of the modern era and set the standard for the coinage that followed. For many collectors, the 1817 issue is the starting point of the classic Sovereign series.

The obverse features Benedetto Pistrucci’s finely engraved laureate bust of King George III facing right, the portrait showing the monarch in classical style with a laurel wreath in his hair. Around the image runs the Latin legend recording his titles as king of the United Kingdom. The reverse bears Pistrucci’s legendary design of Saint George on horseback slaying the dragon, dated 1817 in the exergue, a powerful and dramatic scene that has become one of the most recognisable reverses in British coinage.

Each coin was struck in 22‑carat gold to a precise weight and diameter, reflecting the exacting standards introduced after the Napoleonic Wars. The fine milling to the edge, along with the sharp detail of the portrait and reverse, demonstrates the high quality of the Royal Mint’s work at the beginning of the Sovereign’s modern story. Surviving examples are treasured for the strength of their strike and the clarity of Pistrucci’s artistry.

For the numismatist, an 1817 George III Gold Sovereign offers a link to a key turning point in Britain’s monetary history, when a new gold standard was established and the Sovereign once again took its place at the heart of the nation’s coinage. It is a coin that combines royal portraiture, iconic design and historical significance, making it an essential addition to any collection of classic British gold.
