The Victorian era was a period of significant change for the United Kingdom that had a lasting impact on the country. Alongside significant economic and technological changes, it witnessed the expansion of the British Empire, as well as social reforms and advancements in science. Queen Victoria acceded to the throne at the age of 18 and went on to reign for 63 years.

The farthing was one of the smallest denominations to enter circulation in Britain. Before this time, pennies would be cut into quarters to give customers change, and these were often referred to as ‘fourthings’. The name evolved into ‘farthing, and the denomination remained in circulation until 1960, more than a decade before decimalisation.

This Queen Victoria farthing is also available as part of The Making of Modern Britain Queen Victoria Bundle, which offers collectors the opportunity to own an example of each of the circulating coins of the monarch’s reign.
