‘Not for Himself but for his Country’
As His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh steps back from public duties, he can reflect on his record of achievement with a well-earned sense of pride. After a short but distinguished naval career, Prince Philip found a new purpose in life as a loyal consort to Her Majesty The Queen. For eight decades he has also devoted himself to hundreds of different causes, to inspiring young people, championing British design and engineering and campaigning tirelessly to protect the environment. He is also a former president of The Royal Mint Advisory Committee.
To recognise this enormous contribution, we struck a £5 commemorative crown to Proof standard, containing 28.28 grams of .925 silver. It features a portrait of the Duke of Edinburgh, designed by Humphrey Paget in 1970.
