Celebrate the playful mischief of one of Beatrix Potter’s most memorable characters with the 2016 UK Squirrel Nutkin 50p coin. Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter’s birth, this coin forms part of a much-loved series that brings her timeless stories to life on UK coinage.

The reverse design by Emma Noble features Squirrel Nutkin in a lively and detailed depiction inspired by Potter’s original illustrations. Captured mid-character, Nutkin’s distinctive posture, whiskers and once-bushy tail are carefully rendered, reflecting his cheeky personality from the classic 1903 tale. The inscription ‘SQUIRREL NUTKIN’ accompanies the design, creating a clear and charming tribute to the story.

The obverse features the fifth portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, showing the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem. This portrait is used on all UK circulating coins from 2015 onwards and represents a modern chapter in British coinage.

Struck in cupro-nickel to standard 50p specifications, the coin weighs 8 grams and measures 27.30 millimetres in diameter. It features the familiar seven-sided shape and a plain edge.

Issued in 2016, the Squirrel Nutkin 50p was the fifth release in the Beatrix Potter series, a collection that has become especially popular with collectors.
