Mark one of the most important moments in the story of rights and freedoms with the 2015 UK Magna Carta £2 coin. Issued to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, this coin pays tribute to the charter first sealed by King John in 1215, a document widely regarded as a foundation of liberty and the rule of law.

The reverse design by John Bergdahl is inspired by medieval imagery and shows King John at the centre, holding a charter in one hand and a quill in the other. He is flanked by a baron and a churchman, representing the powerful groups who challenged royal authority and sought to limit the power of the crown. The inscription “MAGNA CARTA” appears above, with the dates “1215 – 2015” below to mark eight centuries since the charter was first agreed. The lettering and engraving style echo the art of the medieval period, giving the coin a strong historical character.

Around the edge of the coin, the inscription “FOUNDATION OF LIBERTY” appears in incuse lettering, capturing the lasting influence of Magna Carta on later ideas of freedom and justice. This detail adds an extra point of interest for collectors who appreciate thoughtful use of the £2 coin’s edge.

The obverse features the fourth definitive portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, in which the Queen wears the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The surrounding Latin legend, “ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · FID · DEF · TWO POUNDS · 2015 ·”, follows the traditional style used on modern British coinage.

Struck to the standard bi-metallic specification of the UK £2 coin, the piece has a nickel-brass outer ring and a copper‑nickel centre. It weighs 12 grams, measures 28.40 millimetres in diameter and has a milled edge with the special inscription. These familiar technical details, combined with a historically rich design, make the 2015 Magna Carta £2 a particularly appealing coin for those who enjoy collecting pieces that tell the story of the United Kingdom’s legal and constitutional heritage.
