Celebrate one of the oldest Olympic sports with the 2011 UK Wrestling 50p coin, issued as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games series. Wrestling has been a central part of the Olympic tradition since ancient times, and this coin reflects both its historic roots and its modern competitive form.

The reverse design was created by Roderick Enriquez and selected from more than 30,000 public submissions. His design captures a powerful moment in the sport, showing one wrestler throwing another within a stadium setting. The figures are intentionally timeless, representing both the ancient origins and the contemporary nature of Olympic wrestling, giving the coin a unique depth of meaning.

Above the scene sits the London 2012 Olympic logo, with the denomination ‘50 PENCE’ below. The composition balances movement and strength, making it a striking addition to the Olympic 50p series.

The obverse features the fourth portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, shown wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, a familiar and respected effigy on UK coinage.

Struck in cupro-nickel to standard 50p specifications, the coin weighs 8 grams and measures 27.30 millimetres in diameter. It features the distinctive seven-sided shape and a plain edge.

With a circulating mintage of 1,129,500, the Wrestling 50p is one of the lower mintage coins in the series, making it particularly appealing to collectors. Issued in 2011, it forms part of a celebrated collection that brought Olympic sport into everyday circulation, offering a lasting tribute to both the heritage and excitement of the Games.
