Celebrate strength, discipline and athletic precision with the 2011 UK Weightlifting 50p coin, issued as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games series. One of 29 designs released to mark the Games, this coin captures the power and technique at the heart of Olympic weightlifting.

The reverse design was created by Rob Shakespeare, a former weightlifter whose personal experience of the sport helped shape his approach. Selected from more than 30,000 public submissions, his design focuses on the moment just before the lift, showing the outline of an athlete preparing to raise the barbell. The composition highlights balance and control, reflecting the technical skill required in the sport.

The London 2012 Olympic logo appears above the design, with the denomination ‘50 PENCE’ below. The simplicity of the layout allows the strength of the central image to stand out, making it a distinctive piece within the series.

The obverse features the fourth portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, shown wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, a familiar effigy on UK coinage.

Struck in cupro-nickel to the standard 50p specification, the coin weighs 8 grams and measures 27.30 millimetres in diameter. It features the characteristic seven-sided shape and a plain edge.

A total of 1,879,500 coins entered circulation, offering collectors the opportunity to own a piece of the London 2012 story. Issued in 2011, the Weightlifting 50p forms part of a celebrated series that brought Olympic sport into everyday life, making it a meaningful addition for those collecting by sport, design or historic event.
