Celebrate focus, precision and control with the 2011 UK Archery 50p coin, issued as part of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games series. One of 29 designs released to mark the Games, this coin captures a defining moment from one of the oldest and most skilful Olympic sports.

The reverse design was created by Piotr Powaga and selected from more than 30,000 public submissions. Rather than depicting a full figure, Powaga chose to focus on a single, powerful detail — a hand drawing back the bowstring with an arrow in place. This close-up perspective captures the tension and concentration required in archery, offering a fresh and distinctive interpretation within the series.

Above the design appears the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games branding, with the denomination ‘50 PENCE’ below. The simplicity of the composition allows the fine detail of the action to stand out, making it particularly appealing to collectors of modern coin design.

The obverse features the fourth portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, shown wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, a familiar effigy on UK coinage.

Struck in cupro-nickel to standard 50p specifications, the coin weighs 8 grams and measures 27.30 millimetres in diameter. It features the distinctive seven-sided shape and a plain edge.

With a circulating mintage of 3,345,500, the Archery 50p is one of the more widely circulated coins in the series. Issued in 2011, it forms part of a celebrated collection that brought Olympic and Paralympic sport into everyday circulation, offering a lasting reminder of London 2012 and the skill at the heart of the Games.
