SHOP NEW COINS

Issued in 2006 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Victoria Cross, this elegant gold proof two-coin set celebrates one of the most respected honours in British history. Struck in 22 carat gold, it brings together two finely detailed Fifty Pence coins, each designed to reflect the bravery, sacrifice and lasting significance of the Victoria Cross.

The first coin features the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the inscription surrounding the edge in classic Royal Mint style. The reverse, designed by Claire Aldridge, shows a powerful depiction of the Victoria Cross itself, with the date 29 JAN 1856 at the centre of the cross, the letters VC to the right and the denomination FIFTY PENCE below. The second coin, designed by Clive Duncan, presents a soldier carrying a wounded comrade, framed by the outline of the Victoria Cross and a striking sunburst effect, creating a moving tribute to courage under fire.

Collectors will appreciate the thoughtful contrast between the two designs, one focusing on the medal itself and the other on the human story behind it. The set was produced as part of the Royal Mint’s 2006 tribute to the Victoria Cross and is struck to a high proof standard, giving both coins mirror-like fields and frosted relief. Weighing 31.00 grams in total, this set combines historical meaning with finely executed craftsmanship, making it a strong addition to any collection of British commemoratives, military themes or modern gold proof issues.
