This commemorative £2 coin was issued in 1995 to honor the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), celebrated on 8 May 1945, marked the formal surrender of Nazi Germany and the conclusion of the war in Europe. The event inspired jubilant celebrations, with crowds gathering to sing and dance in cities such as London, New York, Paris, and Moscow.

The reverse design, created by John Mills, features a dove holding an olive branch as a symbol of peace. Mills described it as "a symbol of aspiring peace; a calm, bountiful, and optimistic image." The coin's edge is inscribed with the words "1945 IN PEACE GOODWILL 1995," further emphasizing its message of hope and reconciliation.
