George V acceded to the throne in 1910 after the death of his father, Edward VII. His reign would shape the country, following the outbreak of the First World War and its aftermath. Because of anti-German sentiment at the time, George V changed the Royal Family’s familial name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor.

The sixpence was a popular denomination when it was in circulation and in 2016, a redenominated sixpence with the value of 6 decimal pence was produced as a memento for collectors.
