George V’s reign was defined by the outbreak of the First World War and its aftermath, with the king changing his familial name to Windsor. The British monarchy became a symbol of national unity and influenced the United Kingdom as we know it today.
The decimal version of the halfpenny was eventually demonetised in 1984. Although it has a history dating back to the thirteenth century as an actual coin, the half penny was only struck in base metals from the seventeenth century onwards.
This coin is also available as part of The Making of Modern Britain George V Bundle, which offers collectors the opportunity to own an example of each of the circulating coins of George V’s reign.
