This 1897 bronze medal celebrates the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria and honours sixty years of her reign. Struck by Spink & Son in London as part of their “Queen’s Glorious Reign” series, it is a substantial and carefully designed piece that will appeal to collectors of late Victorian medals and royal commemoratives.

The obverse shows a crowned laureate bust of Queen Victoria facing left with the Latin legend VICTORIA DEI GRA: BRITT: REGINA FID: DEF: IND: IMP and a central inscription IN COMMEMORATION ANNI REGNI MDCCCXCVII, marking the jubilee year. Designed by Frank Bowcher, the portrait and inscription are presented in a formal and dignified style that reflects the significance of the occasion and the length of Victoria’s service as queen.

The reverse is devoted to the Royal Family, with the royal arms on a central shield and smaller surrounding shields bearing the names of family members, together with the title THE ROYAL FAMILY. The dates 1837 and 1897 frame the reign, while a further inscription records H.R.H PRINCE CONSORT DIED 1861, adding a note of remembrance for Prince Albert. This arrangement gives the medal strong family and dynastic character, as well as celebrating the jubilee itself.

At 51 mm and struck in bronze with a milled edge, the medal has real presence in the hand and on display. The bronze surface gives it a warm, traditional appearance, and the high relief and clear engraving show the quality of the work.
