This 1839 silver medal marks the Centenary of Wesleyan Methodism and honours Charles Wesley, one of the founding figures of the Methodist movement. The obverse presents a three‑quarters draped bust of Charles Wesley facing left, with the surrounding legend CHARLES WESLEY, M.A. BORN DEC. 18. 1708. DIED MAR. 29. 1788. The portrait, engraved by Charles Frederick Carter, gives a dignified and thoughtful image of Wesley, while the dates firmly anchor the medal in the story of 18th‑century English religious life. The clear lettering and careful modelling of the bust are still sharply defined in hand, reflecting both the quality of the original engraving and the well‑preserved state of this example.

The reverse is devoted to the centenary itself, with CENTENARY OF WESLEYAN METHODISM, 1839 set above a seven‑line inscription. At its heart is the much‑quoted line “GOD BURIES HIS WORKMEN, BUT CARRIES ON HIS WORK,” a phrase which captures the continuing spirit of Wesleyan Methodism beyond the lives of its founders. Around the inscription runs a wreath of oak and laurel leaves, combining symbols of strength, achievement and remembrance and giving the reverse a balanced and harmonious design.

Struck in silver, the medal has a bright yet mature tone, and in Extremely Fine condition it retains crisp detail across both portrait and wreath.
