This bronze medal marks the Treaty of Paris in 1814, the agreement that brought a long period of war in Europe to a close. Preserved in Extremely Fine condition, it has the strong detail and historical character that make medals from this period so appealing to collectors.

The obverse shows the head of Britannia in a Corinthian helmet facing left, with the simple but powerful inscription BRITANNIA. Designed by Paul Joseph Raymond Gayrard and signed J. MUDIE D., the portrait gives the medal a bold and patriotic feel. The reverse, engraved by Jean-Pierre Droz, shows Hercules standing on a French standard with the legend THE REPOSE OF HERCULES MDCCCXIIII. It is a striking image that suggests peace after conflict, and it gives the medal a strong classical style.

Issued as part of James Mudie’s National Medals series, this piece is closely linked to the political and military events of the Napoleonic era. For collectors, that connection adds real interest, as do the named designers and the clear symbolism on both sides. The combination of Britannia and Hercules makes the medal easy to read and rich in meaning, while the bronze finish gives it a warm, traditional appearance.

At 40 mm, it is a neatly sized medal with fine detail and a pleasing feel in hand. It is a particularly attractive piece for collectors of Napoleonic material, early nineteenth-century British medals and the work of James Mudie.
