The modern Elizabethan era saw a range of significant changes that have had a lasting impact on the United Kingdom. Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne in 1952 at the age of 25 and had the first televised coronation in 1953. Reigning before and after decimalisation took place in 1971, she is the only monarch in British history to have had both a pre-decimal and decimal coinage.

This Queen Elizabeth II threepence had a unique 12-sided shape and was a popular denomination following the Second World War. A portcullis reverse design replaced the thrift design that had been introduced during the reign of George VI and the threepence ceased to be used after decimalisation in 1971.

This coin is also available as part of The Making of Modern Britain Queen Elizabeth II Pre-Decimal Coin Bundle, which offers collectors the opportunity to own an example of each pre-decimal coin of Elizabeth II’s reign.
