The longest-reigning British monarch in history, Queen Elizabeth II’s reign witnessed significant social and technological changes across the United Kingdom. She is also the only British monarch in history to have had both a pre-decimal and decimal coinage.
This historic half-crown had a value of two shillings and sixpence. Its existence was threatened by the introduction of the florin in the nineteenth century, which had a value of 1/10 of a pound, but the half-crown was not demonetised until 1970, a year before decimalisation.
This coin is also available as part of The Making of Modern Britain Queen Elizabeth II Pre-Decimal Bundle, which offers collectors the opportunity to own an example of each of Elizabeth II’s pre-decimal coins.
