The modern Elizabethan era witnessed a number of significant historical events that had a lasting impact on the United Kingdom. Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne in 1952 and is the only monarch in British history to have had both a pre-decimal and decimal coinage, as decimalisation took place in 1971.
The £2 coin was first introduced as a circulating coin in 1998. After some consultation before this, it was decided that a £2 coin was needed for circulation. Designed to be easier to identify from other coins already in circulation, it was the first modern bimetallic coin in UK circulation. Popular with collectors and much like the 50p coin, the £2 coin has been used to commemorate important events and figures and elements of British history.
This coin is also available as part of The Making of Modern Britain Queen Elizabeth II Decimal Bundle, which offers collectors the opportunity to own an example of each of Elizabeth II’s decimal coins.
