Celebrate The Royal Mint’s past and present with this limited-edition 1974 and 1976 Sovereign Set. Featuring one of the last Sovereigns struck at Tower Hill, London, and one of the first Sovereigns struck in Llantrisant, Wales, this set is the perfect way to commemorate The Royal Mint’s prestigious heritage.

On 1 March 1966, the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, James Callaghan, announced that the United Kingdom would be adopting a decimal currency in which the pound was to be divided into 100 units. This change to the currency posed a problem for The Royal Mint due to the dated and cramped conditions at its Tower Hill headquarters. Faced with the challenge of striking billions of new coins, in 1967 The Royal Mint announced that it would be moving out of London to a new site in Llantrisant, South Wales. Her Majesty The Queen officially opened the new site in December 1968 and following the transfer of production from London to Wales, the Tower Hill site became increasingly redundant before finally closing for good in 1980.
