Boasting international appeal with a strong Commonwealth connection, this exclusive set includes two classic coins from the Canadian branch of The Royal Mint. Both issued in the early twentieth century, the set combines one of the first Canadian Sovereigns that were issued during George V’s reign with one of the last Canadian Sovereigns released during his reign. Both coins feature the mint mark ‘C’ just above the year date, indicating that they were struck in Ottawa.

The history of the Royal Canadian Mint is a fascinating tale. Initially, Canada's coinage was actually struck at The Royal Mint in London, with British colonial coins for Canada struck in the United Kingdom as far back as 1858.. With the discovery of gold in the Yukon in 1900, the Canadian Government expressed a wish for the right to coin sovereigns. Consequently, the Canadian House of Commons resolved to fund a branch of the Royal Mint in Ottawa a year later.

The branch mint in Canada finally opened on the 2 January 1908 but it wasn’t until 1931 that they gained their independence from The Royal Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint was born. During that 23-year period when The Royal Mint operated in Canada, some fascinating gold coins were struck in Ottawa.
