Victoria Golden Jubilee Currency Set, 1887

This set commemorates Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, featuring 11 coins struck in 1887:

Gold Coins (22 carat):

  • Five-Pounds (Quintuple Sovereign)

  • Two-Pounds (Double Sovereign)

  • Sovereign

  • Half-Sovereign

Silver Coins (.925 sterling):

  • Crown

  • Double-Florin (with Roman I in date)

  • Halfcrown

  • Florin

  • Shilling

  • Sixpence (withdrawn type)

  • Threepence

All coins display the new "Jubilee Head" portrait by J. Edgar Boehm, featuring Queen Victoria with a small crown and veil. The gold coins and Crown reverse show St George and the dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci, while other denominations feature various heraldic designs.

The set is housed in a dark red Spink & Son case with a black pad, which is of later manufacture, likely from the 1960s.

While all coins have been polished and cleaned, they remain in extremely fine condition.

Of particular interest is the withdrawn sixpence, which was quickly replaced due to its similarity in size to the half-sovereign, making it prone to fraudulent gilding.

This set represents a pivotal moment in British numismatic history, marking both Victoria's 50th year on the throne and a significant redesign of the coinage.
