Struck during the later years of the Restoration, the 1670 Charles II Maundy Set offers a remarkable glimpse into one of Britain’s most enduring ceremonial traditions. Issued as part of the annual Maundy service, these coins were specially prepared for distribution by the monarch, symbolising charity and royal grace.

This four-coin set comprises the silver Maundy denominations of one, two, three and four pence, each finely struck in sterling silver. Unlike circulating coinage of the period, Maundy money was produced to a higher standard, resulting in sharper detail and a distinctive brilliance that continues to appeal to collectors today.

The obverse features the laureate portrait of King Charles II, reflecting the classical influence that defined much of his coinage following the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660.

With its direct connection to royal ceremony and its place within the long history of Maundy traditions, this set represents both a tangible link to 17th-century Britain and a fascinating addition to any numismatic collection.
