In 1819, worried that small amounts of gold were being lost as circulating coins wore down over time, the Ricardo Ingot Plan proposed that all gold circulating coins be replaced by banknotes. By the First World War Sovereign production all but stop completely, except for occasional releases to mark special royal events. The Sovereign would also take on a growing role in the international bullion market which kept the story alive.
Today that story goes from strength to strength and continues with The Sovereign 2019. This Three-Coin Set includes The Quarter-Sovereign, which was first introduced ten years ago in 2009.
