The Sovereign was reborn in 1817 but immediately faced a challenge to its role as currency. In 1819, worried that small amounts of gold were being lost as circulating coins wore down over time, the Ricardo Ingot Plan proposed that all gold circulating coins be replaced by banknotes. But The Sovereign endured and 200 years later it goes from strength to strength, treasured by collectors all over the world.
