The first ‘Armistice Day’, as Remembrance was then known, was held on 11 November 1919 – exactly one year after the signing of the Armistice – providing veterans and the general public with an opportunity to honour those killed in one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. Partly inspired by a public campaign in various newspapers, Remembrance was conceived as a sombre occasion, contrasting earlier commemorations of the war which had a somewhat more triumphant spirit.

The Remembrance Day 2019 coin seeks to capture that respectfulness with a simple design by artist Harry Brockway. This silver Proof piedfort coin is double the weight of the £5 silver Proof coin, continuing a numismatic tradition that stretches back several centuries. The Royal Mint issues a new coin each year to commemorate Remembrance Day and the number of piedfort coins being made available this year is nearly half that of last year. As a result, this coin takes on a particularly special quality: commemorating a unique moment in history and relatively limited in availability.

IWM records and tells the stories of those who have lived, fought and died in conflict since 1914. The Royal Mint will donate to IWM 2.5% of the recommended retail price of this product and your purchase ensures that these stories are heard.
