Restored to Britain’s coinage in 1817, the return of The Sovereign almost proved short-lived. In 1819, economist David Ricardo devised a plan to replace circulating gold coinage with 60oz ingots held at the Bank of England. While the plan was consigned to the history books, The Sovereign survived, and 200 years later, it remains the world’s oldest coin still in production.

With a diameter of more than 36 millimetres, The Five-Sovereign Piece provides the largest platform available in The Sovereign 2019 Collection upon which to view the famous work of Benedetto Pistrucci. His St George and the dragon design is considered a masterpiece of numismatic art and has been struck on this coin with the state-of-the-art precision and quality for which The Royal Mint is known.

Featuring a stylish Matt finish, this 22 carat gold coin easily fulfils the same purpose as the first Sovereign did when commissioned by Henry VII in 1489: to impress all who see it.
