Navigating the treacherous seas around Cape Horn, the crew of HM Bark Endeavour sailed to the very edge of the known world. Landing at Tahiti they observed a rare astronomical phenomenon – the Transit of Venus – which was key to determining the size of the Solar System. Having recorded his findings and charted this extraordinary island, Cook turned his attention to the sealed orders in his possession. Heading due south, the search was on for the fabled continent thought to lie beyond.

The Royal Mint is delighted to present the second release in the three-coin series celebrating the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s most famous voyage. Struck in fine silver and finished to Proof standard, artist Gary Breeze commemorates Captain Cook’s time at Tahiti in 1769, with a design featuring the mast of the Endeavour below a celestial image of the Transit of Venus. A celebration of one the greatest figures in British history, whose legacy lives on our knowledge of the Earth and stars.
